A recent Vatican report has shed light on the reality of Christian persecution worldwide, documenting over 1,600 cases of Christians killed for their faith since 2000.

The report, compiled by a Vatican commission comprising historians, theologians, and experts, highlights the widespread nature of this violence across different regions.

The commission confirmed 1,624 cases of Christians murdered because of their faith between 2000 and 2025, with the actual number potentially higher due to underreporting in remote areas.

Regional Breakdown:
Sub-Saharan Africa: 643 Christians killed, mostly by jihadists or in ethnic-political conflicts.

Asia and Oceania: 357 Christians killed, including 200 victims of the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka.

The Americas: 304 Christians killed, often by criminal organizations or due to environmental activism.

Middle East and North Africa: 277 Christians killed, with many belonging to non-Catholic denominations.

Europe: 43 Christians killed, with an additional 110 European missionaries and nuns killed elsewhere.

Pope Leo XIV honoured these modern-day martyrs in a special ceremony, praising their courage and lamenting the growing number of Christians persecuted worldwide.
