Pope Francis has honoured Christian martyrs from all denominations, celebrating their enduring faith, courage, and unwavering commitment. During the “No Greater Love: Martyrdom and Offering of Life” conference, organised by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, the Pope emphasised the unity and resilience of Christians in the face of persecution, regardless of denominational differences.

Held in Rome from November 11 to 14, the conference gathered theologians, scholars, and religious leaders to explore the theological, historical, and cultural significance of martyrdom. Pope Francis underscored that even today, many Christians around the world sacrifice their lives for their faith, often defending justice, truth, peace, and human dignity.

In his address, the Pope announced the establishment of a special commission within the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints. This commission will study and document the lives and testimonies of contemporary martyrs from various Christian traditions, aiming to inspire faith and solidarity among Christians worldwide throughout 2025.

Highlighting the sacrifice of modern-day martyrs, the Pope referenced the 21 Coptic Christians who were kidnapped and executed in Libya in 2015, affirming that despite not being Catholic, they are recognized as martyrs by the Church. He also reflected on the equality of martyrdom, recalling the Uganda Martyrs, 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts, executed in the late 19th century.

Pope Francis’s tribute serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring courage and sacrifice of Christian martyrs. Their testimonies continue to inspire and unite believers across the globe, reinforcing the shared strength and solidarity of the Christian faith.
