Vatican Introduces AI-Enhanced Church Services in Preparation for Jubilee

By Marie

The Vatican has unveiled AI-enhanced church services ahead of the upcoming Jubilee celebrations in 2025. This innovative initiative aims to provide virtual access to the architectural marvels of St. Peter’s Basilica, allowing a global audience to experience its splendor from anywhere in the world.

The project, a collaboration between the Vatican, Microsoft, and heritage digitalization company Iconem, includes the launch of an interactive website, a digital replica of the basilica, and two AI-enabled exhibitions. These tools will offer immersive virtual tours and enhanced experiences, making the basilica’s rich history and artistry more accessible to people worldwide.

Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, likening the new tools to a telescope or spaceship that provides better viewing of the basilica’s grandeur. Pope Francis also acknowledged the potential of AI to broaden access to knowledge, while emphasizing the importance of using it ethically to benefit humanity.

The AI project involved scanning the basilica with drones, cameras, and lasers, resulting in a detailed 3D model that will aid in preservation and restoration efforts. This digital twin of St. Peter’s Basilica is expected to enhance the spiritual experience for pilgrims and visitors, both in Rome and around the world.

As the Catholic Church prepares for the Jubilee, these AI-enhanced services represent a significant step forward in making its cultural and spiritual heritage more accessible to a global audience.
