Four new chaplains in Scotland were installed at a special evening service at Corstorphine Old Parish Church in Edinburgh.

Reverend Dr Grant Barclay, interim Clerk to the Presbytery of Glasgow, Reverend Moira McDonald, minister of Corstorphine Old Parish Church, Reverend Dr Marjory MacLean, minister at South Ronaldsay and Burray Parish Church in Orkney, and Reverend Professor John Swinton FRSE FBA, current Chair in Divinity and Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen, were all recently appointed as Chaplains to Her Majesty the Queen.

Members of the Chapel Royal take part in formal state occasions and conduct services at significant national events.

They might also serve HM the Queen as her personal spiritual advisers when she is in Scotland.

There are 10 chaplains to the Queen in Scotland and each normally holds office until the age of 70.

An Honorary Chaplain to the Queen (QHC) is a member of the clergy within the United Kingdom who, through long and distinguished service, is appointed to minister to the monarch of the United Kingdom.

When George VI reigned, they were known as Honorary Chaplains to the King (KHC).

Honorary Chaplains wear a scarlet cassock and a special bronze badge consisting of the royal cypher and crown within an oval wreath.

e badge is worn below medal ribbons or miniature medals during the conduct of religious services on the left side of the scarf by chaplains who wear the scarf and on the academic or ordinary clerical dress by other chaplains.

The chaplains, along with a physician, a surgeon, an apothecary, a sculptor, an astronomer, a historiographer and some others form part of Her Majesty’s household.

The Queen is also served by her two domestic Royal Chaplains, the ministers of Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh and Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle.

They are all personally chosen by the Queen and are people in whom she has placed her trust.
