Title: Maturing into Completion – Pastor Dolapo Olapoju
Bible Text: 2 Timothy 2:1-26
Sermon:
Growth is the development or improvement towards a goal.
Complete: Bring to a whole, with all the necessary parts and components.
Paul described Timothy in 7 different ways:
1. Son
2. Soldier
3. Athlete
4. Farmer
5. Workman
6. Vessel
7. Servant
1. The Son
2 Timothy 2:1-2. Fathers expect honour from their sons.
-We must be conscious of our sonship in Christ.
-We must be conscious of our spiritual birth.
-We must pay attention to his Word.
What is expected from a son:
-Obedience
-Loyalty
-Honour
We must walk in these 3 ways with God for us to grow exponentially.
2. The Soldier
2 Timothy 2:3-4 tells us to endure hardness.
As a soldier, there is no downtime.
Isaiah 28:9-10
What is expected of a soldier:
-Maturity
-Loyalty
-Sworn commitment
-Devotion
-Discipline
3. The Athlete
2 Timothy 2:5
-Compete according to the rules.
-Doing things in line with the dictates of the word of God.
What is expected of the Athlete:
-Training
-Perseverance
-Determined
-Focused; on course to finish
They learn from the last mistake.
God crowns the winner.
4. The Farmer
2 Timothy 2:6
Genesis 8: 22 keeps the farmer going. He believes in the word of God.
-They save
-They sow
-They wait patiently
You must trust in Him to give grace and increase.
5. The Workman
2 Timothy 2:14-15
To become an unashamed worker, we must combine the commitment of an athlete and the faith of a farmer.
6. The Vessel
You determine which kind of vessel you want to be for God. It’s in your hands. We are vessels with different capacities.
Strive to be good worthy vessels.
Do what it takes to be fit for the master use. Be not conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your heart.
7. The Servant
A good servant does the will of his father.
Luke 12:40-44
A faithful servant-
-Loyal
-Devoted
-Committed
John 17:1-4
Steps to Maturity
-Desire to grow.
-Maintain the desire to grow.
-Nourish yourself with the word.
-Exercise yourself in the Spirit.
-Realize it takes time and continuous practice.
