Cynthia Erivo Responds to Criticism Over Casting Role

Cynthia Erivo has addressed the backlash surrounding her casting as Jesus in the upcoming production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl. Some critics have expressed concerns over the choice, but Erivo remains unfazed.

Speaking in a recent interview, she responded directly to the criticism, saying, “Why not? You can’t please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realise, ‘Oh, it’s a musical, the gayest place on Earth.’”

The production, scheduled to run from August 1 to 3, features Cynthia Erivo in the lead role alongside Adam Lambert as Judas. The musical, which debuted in 1971, has seen various interpretations over the years, and this latest version is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the story.

Despite the mixed reactions, Erivo is focused on delivering a strong performance and hopes audiences will enjoy the show for what it is, a theatrical production designed to entertain and inspire.
