Bishop Mike Okonkwo celebrated his 80th birthday over the weekend on 6th September, 2025 and it was commemorated with the 24th edition of the Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture, held at the Civic Centre in Lagos, themed “The Nigeria of Our Dream: Today’s Reality and a Responsible Pathfinder”.

Born on September 6, 1945, Bishop Okonkwo has spent over four decades in ministry, shaping Nigeria’s spiritual landscape and championing causes of social justice, education, and youth empowerment.  

As part of the celebration, winners of the Mike Okonkwo Essay Competition were honoured with cash prizes and laptops, while their schools received sets of computers. Davina Phillips, the first-place winner, was awarded ₦1,000,000 and a laptop.

President Bola Tinubu joined the chorus of tributes, praising Bishop Okonkwo’s “visionary stewardship” and describing him as a “respected leader, mentor, and advocate for the downtrodden.”
