Nigeria’s sprint hurdler, Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan banks on God’s grace as she broke the women’s 100m hurdles world record to win gold at the World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon.
After her semi-finals race on Saturday, Amusan posted on her Facebook page saying, “God is working His purpose out. Glad to have broken the African Record THREE times. I don’t know why it’s coming by 0.01s each time. I am trusting God through the rounds! ”
“This is my 3rd appearance at the World Champs. I was a semifinalist in London 2017, finished 4th in Doha 2019 and by God’s grace I will be on the podium this year, ” she continued.
Amusan obliterated two records in the Semis. She broke her African Record set in the heats and the 12.20s World Record set by America’s Kendra Harrison which has stood for six years.
Tobi Amusan, yet again, ran 12.o6s in the final to beat Olympic Champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and won Nigeria’s first ever Gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. The time was, however, ruled ineligible as the wind speed exceeded the legal limit.
Amusan will next compete at the Commonwealth Games beginning on Thursday, July 28 in Birmingham.
Amusan opened her 2022 season by winning the 2022 Diamond League event in Paris, where she set an African record by 0.01s with a time of 12.41s.
She won gold in the 100m hurdles at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius, defending her title successfully with a time of 12.57s. She also competed in the women’s 4×100m and won gold.
Later in 2022, she competed in a Diamond League meet, finishing second with a time of 12.60s, behind Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn.
Amusan showed a lot of athletic potential from an early age. She was a silver medallist at the 2013 African Youth Championships in Warri. She also claimed gold in the 100 metres hurdles at the 2015 African Junior Athletics Championships in Addis Ababa.
In 2015, while making her All-Africa Games debut as an eighteen-year-old, she won the gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles.
