Romania has reached a pivotal point with the consecration of the People’s Salvation Cathedral, the world’s largest Orthodox church, in Bucharest. The grand cathedral, situated behind the Palace of the People built by former communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu, was opened after 15 years of construction.

The Romanian Orthodox Church views the cathedral as “a symbol of national identity,” reflecting the country’s deeply Orthodox heritage. With approximately 85% of Romania’s 19 million population identifying as religious, the cathedral is expected to become a significant spiritual hub.

The cathedral boasts an impressive design, with a height of over 125 meters (410 feet) and an inner capacity for 5,000 worshippers. Its opulent interior features intricate mosaics and frescoes covering an area of approximately 17,800 square meters (191,000 square feet), inspired by medieval Romanian art and Byzantine influences.
