Vatican Prepares for Papal Election, Installs Chimney Over Sistine Chapel
By Church News
As preparations for the papal conclave intensify, Vatican workers have installed the traditional chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, a crucial step in the process of electing the next pope. The installation, completed on May 2, 2025, marks the final phase before the secretive gathering of cardinals begins on May 7.
The chimney plays a vital role in the conclave, serving as how the world learns of the election results. After each round of voting, the ballots are burned in a special furnace inside the chapel. If no pope has been chosen, the ballots are mixed with chemicals to produce black smoke, signalling that deliberations will continue. When a new pope is elected, the ballots are burned with a different mixture, producing white smoke, which announces the selection of the 267th pontiff.
The Sistine Chapel, adorned with Michelangelo’s famous frescoes, has been the site of papal elections since 1878. The installation of the chimney is one of the final steps before the cardinals are sequestered for the voting process.
A total of 133 cardinals will participate in the conclave, casting their votes in secrecy. The majority of these electors were appointed by Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025. The conclave follows strict protocols, with cardinals taking an oath of secrecy before beginning the voting rounds. Historically, conclaves have lasted anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the complexity of the decision-making process.
Thousands of faithful are expected to gather in St. Peter’s Square, watching the chimney for the historic moment when white smoke emerges. The election of a new pope is one of the most significant events in the Catholic Church, shaping its future direction and leadership.
As the world waits, Vatican officials continue their meticulous preparations, ensuring that the centuries-old tradition unfolds smoothly. The conclave is set to begin on May 7, with the first round of voting expected to take place shortly after the cardinals enter the Sistine Chapel.
