Usain Bolt: “I Was Given Time by God to Run”
By Church News
Eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt has long been known for his lightning speed, celebrations, and record-shattering performances. But behind the scenes, the world’s fastest man credits his success to his unwavering faith in God.
In a recent interview with Premier Christianity, Bolt opened up about the spiritual foundation that has guided him throughout his career. “I travel with my Bible. I still read it. I grew up as a Christian. It’s very important in my life,” he said. “I’m pretty blessed. I was given the time by God to run and compete”.
Bolt, now 39, was raised in a Seventh-day Adventist home in Jamaica before converting to Catholicism. His middle name, Saint Leo, honours an early pope, and one of his twin sons also bears the name. Throughout his career, Bolt was often seen making the sign of the cross and pointing skyward before races — a gesture of gratitude and faith.
His mother, a devout churchgoer, continues to encourage him to attend services. Bolt also wears a Miraculous Medal, a Catholic symbol of protection, and has spoken publicly about the importance of prayer and spiritual discipline.
Though retired since 2017, Usain Bolt remains a global icon and role model. “Nothing would have been possible without Him,” Bolt once said, reflecting on his journey from a small town in Trelawny to Olympic stadiums around the world.
