Scottie Scheffler: “The Reason Why I Play Golf is I’m Trying to Glorify God”

By Church News

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler, following his recent victory at the British Open, reaffirmed that his motivation for playing golf goes far beyond the leaderboard. “The reason why I play golf is I’m trying to glorify God,” Scheffler said, echoing a sentiment he’s shared throughout his career.

Despite holding multiple major championships including two Masters titles and now a British Open win, Scheffler insists that golf is not what fulfills him. “This is not a fulfilling life,” he explained. “It’s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it’s not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart”.

Scottie Scheffler, who describes himself as a “Christ follower,” often speaks about his spiritual priorities. He acknowledges his wife Meredith and close friends for helping him stay grounded, especially during high-pressure tournaments.

After winning the 2024 Masters, he shared how his friends reminded him, “My victory was secure on the cross.” That message, he said, gave him peace and clarity.
