Reverend Dr Ric Thorpe Elected as Archbishop of Melbourne

By Church News

The Anglican Diocese of Melbourne has elected Reverend Dr Ric Thorpe as its new Archbishop of Melbourne. Dr Thorpe, who has been serving as the Suffragan Bishop of Islington in the Diocese of London, will take over from Archbishop Philip Freier, who retired earlier this year after nearly two decades in the role.

Dr Ric Thorpe is known for his work in church growth and revitalisation, particularly through church planting initiatives in London. His election took place during the Melbourne Diocesan Synod, where he received strong support from clergy and church members.

Expressing his gratitude, Dr Thorpe said he was “humbled” by the opportunity to serve and looks forward to working with communities across the diocese. His formal installation is expected to take place later this year.

Church leaders have welcomed the announcement, noting Dr Ric Thorpe’s experience and dedication to supporting congregations. His leadership is expected to bring continuity and fresh perspectives to the Anglican Church in Melbourne.
