Pope Leo XVI Officially Installed as Pontiff in Vatican Ceremony
By Church News
Pope Leo XVI was officially installed as the leader of the Catholic Church during a solemn Mass today, Sunday, May 18. The ceremony, steeped in tradition and symbolism, marked the beginning of his papacy, drawing thousands of faithful, dignitaries, and religious leaders from around the world.
The newly appointed pontiff, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, is the first U.S.-born pope in history. His installation was attended by global leaders, including representatives from the United States and Peru, reflecting his dual citizenship. The event featured the bestowal of the pallium, a lambswool stole symbolising his pastoral responsibility, and the fisherman’s ring, which serves as his official seal.
Pope Leo XVI began the day with a tour of St. Peter’s Square in the popemobile, greeting pilgrims and blessing children before proceeding to the basilica for prayer at the tomb of St. Peter. His homily emphasised unity and peace, calling for the Church to be a beacon of reconciliation in a world facing discord.
The installation ceremony was attended by heads of state, religious leaders, and thousands of worshippers who gathered to witness the historic moment. The Vatican has announced that Pope Leo XVI will hold his first general audience on May 21, where he is expected to outline his vision for the Church.
