Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace Following Benue Violence

By Church News

Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep concern over the recent violence in Benue State, Nigeria, where attacks on rural communities have led to significant loss of life.

Speaking during his Sunday Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square, the Pope offered prayers for the victims and their families, calling for security, justice, and peace in the region. “I pray that peace will prevail in Nigeria, a country facing many challenges,” Pope Leo stated.

He also acknowledged the struggles of rural Christian communities in Benue state, who have been affected by the ongoing violence.

The attacks, which occurred in Yelewata and Daudu communities in Guma Local Government Area, reportedly targeted internally displaced persons (IDPs) seeking refuge at a local Catholic mission. Witnesses described the incident as devastating, with homes destroyed and families displaced.
