Pope Francis Declares Global Day of Prayer for Peace
By Marie
Pope Francis has called for a global day of prayer and fasting for peace on October 6 to mark the first anniversary of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The announcement was made after holy mass for the opening of the second session of the General Assembly of the Synod in St Peter’s Square on October 2.
“In this dramatic hour of our history,” Pope Francis said, according to Vatican news. “while the winds of war and the fires of violence continue to devastate entire peoples and nations,” the Christian community is reminded of its call to “put itself at the service of humanity.”
Pope Francis also announced his plan to visit Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major on October 6. He invited all the over 400 synod members to accompany him.
During the personal visit, the Holy Father will pray the rosary, seeking the intercession of the Virgin Mary for peace.
“Let us walk together,” the Pope urged. “Let us listen to the Lord. And let us be led by the breeze of the Spirit.”
Since his election as the 266th pope to lead the Church, Pope Francis has become a globally popular figure, admired for his humility, compassion, and commitment to peace. He has championed issues like poverty reduction, environmental protection, and interfaith dialogue.
