More than two decades after its groundbreaking debut, The Passion of the Christ is getting a long-awaited sequel and it’s coming in two parts.
Director Mel Gibson has announced that The Resurrection of the Christ, the follow-up to his 2004 biblical epic, will hit theaters in 2027, with each instalment arriving 40 days apart.
The first part of the sequel is set to premiere on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while the second part will be released on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
Gibson, has described the project as “massive” and “not a linear narrative.” He’s hinted at a story that spans realms and timelines, including depictions of hell, the fall of angels, and the death of the last apostle. “One script is very structured, and the other is like an acid trip,” Gibson said in a 2022 interview, suggesting a bold and unconventional approach to biblical storytelling.
