Nigerian Bishops Call For Improved Security

Nigeria Bishops have raised a united cry for improved security in the country. According to them, Government can ensure improved security in the country if it doubles up efforts in that regard. They decry the terrible state of things in the country as there are daily reports of kidnappings and violent killings.The Bishops insist that things cannot go on like this. They urge the government to rise up to its responsibility to the Nigerian people. In line with this, Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza of Yola State Diocese stated that “citizens are losing confidence in the government because it is not fulfilling its primary constitutional responsibility which is the protection of lives and property of citizens.”Similarly, Rev. Father Moses Lorapuu bemoans the “massive wave of persecution of Christians, especially in the Northern states.” These attacks, he continued, has left many displaced, widowed and fatherless. Undoubtedly, Fulani herdsmen are the major culprits of these attacks. Supposedly, the herdsmen clash with local farmers on account of scarce resources.Rev. Father Lorapuu observes that “the fact that people are kidnapped from farmlands, and are killed in the church or in their sleep indicates that there are other motivations behind their actions.”
