Nigeria Is A Secular State – CAN President Warns Senate

By Bede

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned the Senate not to bring religion into the Nigerian constitution.

The CAN President, Reverend Samuel Ayokunle has described Nigeria as a secular state. One which does not belong to any particular religion. In view of this, he cautions the Senate to be mindful not to introduce any religious sanctions into the constitution. This is to avoid favouring one religion over another. Also, it will ensure that Nigerians are not subject to religious laws not of their choice.

This warning comes after an alleged attempt by the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review to introduce Sharia Law to different zones in the country. The CAN President admonishes the Senate to respect the religion of individual citizens in the country. Failure to do so will only lead to more crises.

Recently, another cleric, Bishop Wale Oke, sounded a similar warning. He also warned the Senate against making any constitutional amendments that would introduce Sharia law to the South-West region.
