Countries across Europe and beyond are preparing to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8, 2025, celebrating the end of World War II in Europe. The milestone will be honoured with ceremonies, parades, and remembrance events, reflecting on the sacrifices made during the war and the triumph of peace.
Victory in Europe Day marks the moment when Nazi Germany officially surrendered, bringing an end to nearly six years of conflict in Europe. The announcement on May 8, 1945, sparked jubilation across Allied nations, with crowds gathering in London, Paris, and New York to celebrate the hard-fought victory.
This year’s anniversary will be observed with four days of celebrations, culminating on May 8 with major events across the UK and Europe:
- A military procession in London, featuring 1,300 members of the Armed Forces marching from Parliament Square to Buckingham Palace.
- A flypast over the capital, showcasing historic and modern military aircraft.
- The lighting of 2,500 beacons across the UK to symbolise unity and remembrance.
- A special tea party at Buckingham Palace, hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla, honouring war veterans.
- Church bells ringing nationwide at 6:30 p.m., echoing the sounds of celebration from 1945.
As the world remembers the sacrifices of the Greatest Generation, leaders have emphasised the importance of preserving history and ensuring that the lessons of World War II remain relevant. Veterans and historians have shared stories of resilience, loss, and the enduring hope that emerged from the war’s end.
