Since their wedding in 2014, Liliana and Shane Stewart have been in a long-distance romance. Although divorced and had two kids, Shane worked as a commercial pilot in Alaska. Liliana lived unattached and alone in Dallas. But Liliana soon started to see an established pattern.

“I remember it was very early in our marriage and I realized that his drinking was a lot more than a normal social drinker,” she said.

It turned out that Shane started drinking in high school. Since drinking at work could cost him his pilot’s license, Liliana didn’t mind that he did it. It did get worse over the next two years, though. This happened when she was eight months pregnant with their daughter and Shane got so drunk that he passed out.

Even so, Shane kept looking for reasons for his behavior.

“I was making it to work, all the bills were paid. I thought it was okay if I just came home. And I’m in my own house and there’s nothing wrong with having a few drinks. Everything’s taken care of,” he said.

With each passing year, Liliana became angrier at her husband. Later, in 2017, after being married for three years, they learned they didn’t know each other.

Liliana prayed every day for her husband while she improved her relationship with God. Something has changed, but not much. Shane was constantly drinking.

Shane added, “I felt very strongly that there wasn’t too much distance between me, driving in my car down the street, and that person. And I just really felt the strong presence of God that says, ‘You can’t do this you. You got to go back,’” Shane recalled.

Lyanna kept praying, and because of that huge realization, Shane now loves spending time with their family. Liliana is now a college pastor at their church, and they’re both thankful that God saved Shane from his addiction and blessed them with a loving, respectful marriage.
