Lambeth Palace Completes £40 Million Upgrade
By Church News
Lambeth Palace, the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, has completed a £40 million upgrade while making it more sustainable and accessible for future generations.
The project, which began in 2019, is one of the most significant renovations in the palace’s 800-year history. It included conservation work on the Grade I listed buildings, modern environmental upgrades, and the construction of the Lambeth Palace Library, now the home to the Church of England’s vast archival collection.
The Most Rev. Justin Welby, former Archbishop of Canterbury, described the completed works as “a renewal rooted in tradition.” He added, “Lambeth Palace stands as a living witness to faith, service, and reconciliation, and this transformation will allow it to better serve the Church and wider public in the years ahead.”
