By Church News

With ‘Jesus Revolution’ getting A+ CinemaScore, Jon Erwin is now the only director to have received four A+ grades since CinemaScore began publicly releasing results in 1986.Some few days ago, trade publications like Variety were predicting that the film which depicts the rise of the Christian hippie movement in Southern California in the late 1960s, would gross about $6-7 million in its opening weekend.Instead, the film grossed an estimated $15.5 million, including $3.3 million from Wednesday- and Thursday-night preview screenings. The film’s box-office triumph also marks a return to form for Jon Erwin, who directed the film with Brent McCorkle. (Erwin directed his previous films with his brother Andrew, who has a producer credit on Jesus Revolution.)Jon Erwin, director of Jesus Revolution, spoke with Dr Mark Turman and Mark Legg about the inspiration for Jesus Revolution, the true story behind the movie, how the Holy Spirit moved on set, and his hope for a new Jesus movement among Gen Z.He shared the reason for making Jesus Revolution in particular and how Time magazine’s 1971 cover story inspired his interest in the shocking true story.Erwin also talked about how they were connected to Lionsgate and Kelsey Grammer and the resurgence in Christian media in Hollywood. He further discussed the striking similarities between Gen Z and the generation that took part in the counterculture movement in the 60s and 70s portrayed in Jesus Revolution. He expands on this theme by encouraging Christians to go on the spiritual offence by living on a mission with optimism.Erwin concluded by challenging the audience to trust Jesus, get out of their seats to reach Gen Z, and watch for God to work in this generation.ALSO READ: ‘Jesus Revolution’ Hits Theatres in February
