John Mark McMillan Announces Retirement from Full-Time Music

By Church News

Renowned Christian singer-songwriter John Mark McMillan, best known for his deeply emotive worship anthem “How He Loves,” has announced his retirement from full-time music after a 20-year career.

McMillan revealed that his upcoming fall tour running from September 3 to 21 across the U.S. will be his last as a touring artist. “It’s time for me to enter a new phase in my life where music is no longer my full-time endeavor,” he wrote.

McMillan said that the economic challenges of sustaining a music career in today’s industry as a major factor in his decision. “Money has never been my primary motivation,” he explained, “but the financial burden of living in a world where music has little or no monetary value has made it hard to find a sustainable model”.

His breakout hit “How He Loves,” written in response to the tragic death of his friend Stephen Coffey, became a defining anthem for a generation of worshippers.
Though stepping back from the spotlight, McMillan assured fans that music will remain a part of his life. He plans to make occasional appearances and collaborate with friends on special projects. “It’s been a beautiful 20 years, and you guys have been the best part,” he said.
