By Church News
Irish missionary and humanitarian worker Gena Heraty has been released after nearly a month in captivity following a kidnapping in Haiti.
Heraty, originally from Westport, County Mayo, was abducted on August 3 along with seven others, including a three-year-old child during an armed raid on the Saint-Hélène orphanage in Kenscoff.
Gena Heraty has lived in Haiti since 1993 and is widely respected for her work with children with special needs through the international charity Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs (Our Little Brothers and Sisters). The orphanage she oversees cares for nearly 300 children, including dozens with disabilities.
The kidnapping sparked statements from Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Pope Leo. Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris confirmed the release, calling it “the outcome we had all hoped.”
