In a remarkable discovery, archaeologists have unearthed a secret staircase leading to a 400-year-old burial vault in the Church of Saint Philibert in Dijon, France.
The Romanesque church, dating back to the 12th century, revealed its hidden treasure during a restoration project. The French National Institute for Preventative Archaeological Research (Inrap) announced the find, highlighting the historical significance of the vault, which contains the remains of adults and children buried in wooden coffins.
The vault, believed to date from the 15th-16th centuries, was found to contain very few objects, apart from rare coins and two rosaries. The foundation of the vault measures about 9 feet in depth, and slab tombs discovered at the site date from the 11th through 13th centuries. This discovery adds to the rich history of the Church of Saint Philibert, the only remaining Romanesque church from the 12th century in Dijon.
The excavation also uncovered six sarcophagi from Late Antiquity, further emphasizing the historical importance of the site. This find offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the burial practices of the time, providing valuable insights for historians and archaeologists alike.
