By Church News

The world is in mourning following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on the 21st of April (Easter Monday) at the age of 88. Known for his impact on the Catholic Church and society at large, Pope Francis was celebrated as a beacon of compassion, humility, and progressive leadership. He was the first Latin American to ascend to the papacy and was widely regarded as a transformative figure in the modern era.

Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis championed the rights of the poor and marginalized, frequently urging global leaders to address inequality and social injustice. He was also an outspoken advocate for environmental conservation, earning praise for his encyclical Laudato Si’, which called for urgent action to combat climate change and protect the planet.

In the wake of his passing, tributes have poured in from leaders, religious figures, and ordinary citizens around the world. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life, expressed his deep sorrow, describing Pope Francis as a man of “faithfulness, courage, and universal love.” King Charles III lauded his dedication to environmental stewardship, while French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted his relentless efforts to bring hope and joy to the poorest communities.

In the United States, President Joe Biden called him “a moral force who guided the world with grace and conviction.”

Across the globe, church bells tolled in solemn recognition of his legacy. In Argentina, his homeland, thousands gathered in prayer, lighting candles and leaving flowers outside cathedrals. Similar scenes unfolded in cities worldwide, where people of all faiths came together to honor his memory.

Pope Francis’ tenure was marked by a series of bold reforms aimed at modernizing the Church and fostering inclusivity. His progressive approach to issues such as poverty, migration, and interfaith dialogue resonated with millions, earning him admiration far beyond the Catholic community.

The Vatican has announced that preparations are underway for the College of Cardinals to convene for the conclave that will select his successor. As the Catholic Church begins a new chapter, Pope Francis’ extraordinary legacy of humility, justice, and compassion will continue to inspire generations to come.
