Global Leaders and Faithful Gather for Pope Francis’ Final Farewell

By Church News

Vatican City is set to host a historic and solemn event today as the world bids farewell to Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week at 88. Known as “The People’s Pope,” Francis leaves a legacy of compassion, humility, and advocacy for the marginalised.

The funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. local time in St. Peter’s Square, presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals. The ceremony will be attended by an array of global leaders, including heads of state, religious figures, and royalty, alongside thousands of mourners from around the world.

The late pontiff’s body has been lying in state at St. Peter’s Basilica since Wednesday, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. The procession to the basilica was marked by a deeply moving ceremony, with cardinals, bishops, and clergy leading the way under the watchful gaze of the Swiss Guards. The pope’s simple wooden coffin, a reflection of his humility, has drawn tens of thousands of visitors who have come to pray and say their goodbyes.

Following the funeral Mass, Pope Francis will be laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, a departure from the tradition of burial in the Vatican grottoes. This decision aligns with his wishes, emphasising his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
