From Africa to Europe: Diverse Nativity Scenes Shine in Wiltshire Church
By Church News
St Mary’s Church in Lydiard Tregoze has transformed into a vibrant celebration of Christmas, showcasing over 100 nativity scenes collected from across the globe.
The display, described as Swindon’s biggest Nativity festival, has drawn visitors from near and far, eager to see the diverse interpretations of the birth of Christ.
The collection is the life’s work of Rev Canon Captain Clive Deverell, who has spent three decades gathering nativity sets from countries including South America, Africa, and Europe, alongside locally crafted pieces.
Some of the more unusual displays include football-themed figures inspired by Real Madrid and a nativity scene featuring a VW camper van, reflecting both creativity and cultural diversity.
Rev Deverell, who is retiring this year, said the festival is a way to remind people of the true meaning of Christmas:
“It’s an opportunity to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the reason for Christmas,” he told BBC Radio Wiltshire.
