Athletes, coaches and staff from Team Fiji join together, singing native Fijian. Their song has transcended international boundaries, with Australian water polo player Matilda Kearns sharing a video of their harmonious collective sound on her Instagram.

The Fijian hymn is ‘Mo Ravi Vei Jisu’, which translates to: “Put your trust into the Lord and he will guide your way”, echoing Proverbs 3:5-6.

The English translation reads:

‘Lean on Jesus today,

Lean on him, upon the cross.

If you’re weary, poor, then come.

Jesus is calling you to come.

Christ Jesus is calling us.

Let us go to him.

My friend why do you wonder aimlessly?

Jesus is calling you, so come.

I was bound in sin by the enemy,

But Jesus sets me free.

You should know it’s true:

His word is alive today.

Those who are weary and heavy laden,

Come to the Lord.’

The majority of Fijians are Christians, of several denominations including Methodist, Pentecostal, Roman Catholic and Anglican.

In an earlier video, Kearns shows herself and her fellow athletes going onto their balconies to hear the Fijians’ praise.

“It’s so beautiful, everyone’s come outside to hear it,” she said, captioning the video: “This is what the Olympics are all about.”
