Nigerian gospel sensation Favour Gabriel has entered the Nigerian music scene with her debut single, “Breathe,” released on October 25, 2024. This track, inspired by Gabriel’s own faith journey and personal growth, transcends mere melody. It’s a passionate call for spiritual renewal, designed to reignite listeners’ connection to God.
Gabriel, born in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and raised in a devout Anglican family, attributes her deep faith and family background to guiding her musical journey.
From singing in her local church choir as a child to embracing her calling in music ministry during her university years, Gabriel’s life has been deeply influenced by both spiritual and musical elements.
Inspired by gospel icons Nathaniel Bassey and Dunsin Oyekan, she aims to infuse traditional gospel music with a fresh, Afrocentric sound, blending the reverence of hymns with energetic rhythms and soulful lyrics.
Her debut single, “Breathe,” showcases her ambition to reach a broad audience—a goal recognized by gospel music experts. “Favour has a unique appeal,” said gospel music analyst Oluwadamilola Adeyemi, “because she merges the timeless spirituality of gospel hymns with a sound that resonates with today’s listeners. This This combination of authenticity and relatability could redefine Nigeria’s gospel music scene and broaden its reach.”
Gabriel recalled that “Breathe” was born from a spiritual encounter during a time of reflection and prayer in the studio. Instead of following a structured songwriting process, she describes it as a moment of divine inspiration, allowing the song’s message to flow naturally.
“I wasn’t trying to write anything in particular,” Favour Gabriel shared. “It was a moment with God where the words and melody came together, expressing a longing for spiritual renewal.”
