Pope Leo XIV Names New Archbishop of Westminster

By Church News

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Richard Moth as the new Archbishop of Westminster. Bishop Moth will succeed Cardinal Vincent Nichols, who is set to retire on February 14 after more than 15 years of service in the role.

Bishop Moth, currently serving as the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, is widely respected for his pastoral sensitivity and commitment to social justice.

His appointment to Westminster, the most senior Catholic post in England places him at the heart of the Church’s mission in the UK, overseeing the largest Catholic diocese and representing the Church in national matters.

In a statement released by the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV expressed gratitude for Cardinal Nichols’ years of service and confidence in Bishop Moth’s ability to guide the Church into a new chapter. “Bishop Moth brings with him a deep pastoral heart and a vision rooted in the Gospel,” the Pope said.
