Debate Over “First Fruit” Teaching Resurfaces
By Church News
A sermon by Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, founder of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry, has resurfaced online, sparking renewed debate.
In the viral clip, Fufeyin stated: “If you pay your first fruit, your sins will be washed away. Even if you’re doing 419 [fraud], God will be behind you”.
The message drew applause from his congregation but backlash from Christian leaders and civil society. Abimbola Ayuba, National Director of Social Welfare for the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), responded:
“God is not fraudulent. He does not share booty with crooks”.
CAN labeled the teaching “heresy” and warned believers against doctrines that could mislead or exploit the vulnerable.
