Christian Movie Review: Church People

By Marie

Church People is a hilarious and entertaining comedy that takes a look at corporate Christianity and challenges us with the question: is the Gospel enough? The film follows the ministry of Guy Sides from the point when showiness and materialism have overtaken the message. We join him on his journey when he decides to get back in touch with the heart of ministry and to be a real role model to his youth group kids. However, he is part of an over-the-top mega-church where stunts take priority over preaching the Gospel. There are many twists and turns along the way including romance, a long-lost daughter and a potentially blasphemous and dangerous stunt for the Easter service. From the start, this film is well produced, the direction, cinematography, soundtrack and story are all of the top quality making this feel like a big-budget movie. The acting is good and the film features Thor Ramsey, Erin Cahill, Michael Monks, Joey Fatone, Stephen Baldwin, William Baldwin and Donald Faison. The story was well written with some laugh-out-loud moments, some twists and turns and a good redemptive message, however, we would have liked to have seen a bit more of Guy’s backstory. We can see that some people may find this movie a bit over the top or feel that it could be making fun of a church, however, it is meant to be over the top, the story is showing a mega church that has lost its way, that puts stunts and profits and corporation before the Gospel. It is meant to shock and make us think about how we are presenting the Gospel, and how we are representing Christ. We pray for any churches that have lost their way to come back to the Gospel.ALSO READ: Shekinah Glory Ministry to Record Live Album in Chicago
