Catholic Women Prioritizes the Need For Boy Education

By Church News

The Catholic Women Organization of Nigeria (CWON) has prioritized the need for a continuous boy-child education just like the girl-child, saying that this will enable a wholesome society where both boys and girls have quality education and morals to become responsible adults in the society. The National President of the CWON, Mary Ashibi Gonsum, stated this at the weekend in Abuja while fielding questions from Journalists during its national general assembly/groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a multipurpose hall for the Cor Mariae Boys College, on the theme, ‘’The Woman(Catholic) Heart of the Family’’.According to her, the groundbreaking ceremony of building a multipurpose hall is significant as it shows their contribution to education, especially of boys who are majorly involved in vices in society, stressing that ‘the government alone cannot do everything.Gonsum stated, ‘’Cor Mariae boys college is the project of the CWON to balance the equation of training for both boys and girls. As women we have in the past kept training only the girls and and you know there is an increase in insurgency, bandits and other vices majorly perpetrated by boys and young men. We felt we should also catch them young by training the boys because we also want responsible men to marry the good girls we are training in the future.‘’We are setting the pace and calling on the government, other women groups, churches, Non Governmental Organizations and other stakeholders not to neglect the boys but continue to train them into responsible adults.”She continued, “We the Catholic women are also begging the Federal Government to do something good for lecturers so they can return to classes because so many are traveling out of the country and we don’t want our children to leave us here, we want our children to remain here and contribute to building their fatherland.‘’This ground breaking ceremony is to ask God to take control of whatever structure we are going to raise here because if God doesn’t build the house they labour in vain and so we are seeking God’s intercession and support as we go out in faith that this structure will be raised here next year.”The  Founder of Cor Mariae project who is a Former CWON President and currently member of the board World Union of Catholic Women’s Organisations (WUCWO) Dame Dr. Felicia Onyeabor, said the idea for the women to also build an all boys school was to also raise morally upright boys with quality education that can compete with top ranking schools around the world.ALSO READ Catholic Church in Australia Concludes Plenary Council
