Catholic Church Commences Its 70th Platinum Anniversary

St Dominic’s Catholic Church, Yaba, Lagos has commenced its 70th Platinum anniversary of God’s faithfulness, excellence, and dedicated service to its ministry.The celebration according to the parish priest, Fr. Charles Onwordi (OP) will stretch till 21st January 2024, the day of its grand finale.In a press briefing, Rev. Onwordi said that the Dominican community will use the occasion to celebrate excellence and give more to society than before. The press briefing session was also used not only in the unveiling of the programme and logo of the jubilee.In his speech, Rev. Onwordi took those present through the journey of Dominicans from Chicago to Nigeria and to Yaba, disclosing the 70 years historical journey of the parish since 1954.He said, “For 800 years, the mission of the Order of Preachers (OP) has been to proclaim the gospel to every corner of the world. We do this for one simple reason: that every soul may come to know and love Jesus Christ.”The clergy disclosed that St. Dominic de Guzman founded the Dominican Order to combat heresies (erroneous teachings) he discovered in southern France in his time.“Dominic saw the need for good preachers, who could explain the truth of the Catholic faith and reconcile those who had fallen away,” Rev. Onwordi noted.He said that the parish’s doors are open for partnership with individuals or groups, religious leaning notwithstanding, so as to touch more lives.The parish plans to award 70 scholarships, beside the ongoing ones, medical outreach, sports events, seminars/symposiums and carols will be part of the 70th platinum anniversary.Also, there will be a thanksgiving service led by the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos Metropolitan See, Dr Alfred Martins, at the grand finale in January 2024.ALSO READ: South Korea to Host WYD 2027 as Announced by Pope Francis
