Cardinals Hold Solemn Mass Before Entering Secret Conclave

By Church News

Catholic cardinals from around the world gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City for a solemn Mass ahead of the closely guarded conclave where they will elect the next leader of the Catholic Church.

Dressed in their red vestments, symbolising their willingness to defend the faith, the cardinals participated in the sacred liturgy, praying for wisdom and divine guidance as they prepare for the responsibility of choosing the next pope. The Mass, known as the “Pro Eligendo Pontifice” (Mass for the Election of the Supreme Pontiff), serves as the final moment of collective worship before they retreat into seclusion.

Following the service, the cardinals will proceed to the Sistine Chapel, the hallowed site where the centuries-old papal election process takes place. The voting sessions, conducted with utmost secrecy, will continue until one among them secures the required two-thirds majority. As tradition dictates, a successful election will be signalled by the release of white smoke from the chapel’s chimney, informing the world that a new pope has been chosen.

The process is expected to be watched closely by millions of Catholics worldwide, as speculation grows about who will be entrusted with leading the Church at this important moment in history.
