Cardinal Robert Prevost Elected as 267th Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV

By Church News

The Catholic Church has welcomed a new leader as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was elected the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. His election, a momentous occasion, marks several historic firsts—he is the first American pope and the first member of the Augustinian Order to ascend to the papacy in modern times.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1955 to Ecuadorian and French parents, Pope Leo XIV has dedicated his life to service and religious leadership. After joining the Order of Saint Augustine, he spent years as a missionary in Peru, working closely with impoverished and indigenous communities. His experience in Latin America shaped his pastoral approach, emphasising social justice, inclusion, and engagement with marginalised populations.

Before his election, Pope Leo XIV served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide—a role that cemented his reputation as a leader with a strong commitment to reform and transparency within the Church.

The papal conclave, which began on May 7, saw 133 cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel to elect the next leader of the Church. The process lasted two days, and as tradition dictates, the cardinals cast their ballots in secrecy. After several rounds of voting, the decision was made, and Cardinal Prevost had secured the necessary support.

As anticipation built, thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square, their eyes fixed on the chimney above the Sistine Chapel. When white smoke finally billowed into the Vatican sky on the evening of May 8, the crowd erupted in cheers, signifying to the world that a new pope had been chosen.

Shortly after, Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the Protodeacon of the College of Cardinals, stepped onto the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica and announced in Latin, “Habemus Papam”—“We have a pope”.

Emerging onto the balcony moments later, Pope Leo XIV greeted the gathered faithful with a warm smile. In his first address, he expressed gratitude for his election and admiration for his predecessor, Pope Francis.
“May we walk together, hand in hand with God, advancing toward a world of peace, understanding, and love,” he told the crowd, emphasising unity and collaboration within the Church.
