Bishop Wilfred Anagbe Urges UK Government to Protect Persecuted Christians in Nigeria
By Church News
In a powerful and emotional appeal, Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi in Nigeria has called on the UK government to take immediate action to protect persecuted Christians in Nigeria.
Speaking at the UK Parliament, Bishop Anagbe painted a harrowing picture of the dire situation faced by Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region. He described how Christians are being systematically targeted and killed by Islamist extremists and militant Fulani herdsmen.
“The situation is dire,” Bishop Wilfred Anagbe said, his voice trembling with emotion. “Christians are being killed, churches are being burned, and entire communities are being displaced. The Nigerian government has failed to protect us, and it is time for the international community to take action.”
Bishop Anagbe’s words were echoed by Dr. Caroline Hull, National Director of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), who emphasized the need for urgent action to support persecuted Christians in Nigeria.
“We have been working tirelessly to provide aid and support to Christians affected by the violence,” Dr. Hull said. “But more needs to be done. We urge the UK government to use its diplomatic influence to pressure the Nigerian government to take concrete steps to address the violence and protect the rights of Christians.”
Bishop Anagbe’s plea has sparked widespread concern and outrage, with many calling for immediate action to protect persecuted Christians in Nigeria. The UK government has been urged to take a strong stance against the Nigerian government’s inaction and to work towards finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
The situation in Nigeria has been deteriorating for years, with thousands of Christians killed and many more displaced. The Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has been responsible for many of the attacks, but militant Fulani herdsmen have also been implicated in the violence.
Bishop Anagbe’s visit to the UK is part of a wider effort to raise awareness about the plight of persecuted Christians in Nigeria. He has met with government officials, parliamentarians, and church leaders to plead for their support and intervention.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, Bishop Anagbe’s words serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for international intervention to protect the rights and lives of persecuted Christians in Nigeria.
“We are not asking for much,” Bishop Wilfred Anagbe said. “We are simply asking for the right to live in peace, to practice our faith without fear of persecution, and to be protected by our government. We hope that the UK government will hear our plea and take action to support us in our time of need.”
