Bishop Jakes Transitions Leadership of The Potter’s House to Sarah Jakes

By Church News

A new chapter has begun for one of America’s most influential churches as Bishop Jakes, the esteemed founder of The Potter’s House, officially hands over leadership to his daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts. This emotional and historic transition marks a pivotal moment in the church’s legacy, as a new generation steps forward to carry the vision forward.

Founded in 1996, The Potter’s House has grown into a global spiritual powerhouse, boasting a 30,000-member congregation and reaching millions through its ministry, conferences, and digital platforms. Under Bishop Jakes’ leadership, the church has expanded beyond Dallas, impacting lives through its community outreach, inspirational teachings, and innovative approach to faith.

For nearly three decades, Bishop Jakes has stood at the helm of this movement, guiding believers through times of uncertainty, revival, and transformation. However, in a deeply reflective moment, the beloved pastor decided it was time to pass the torch not just to any successor, but to family members whose heart for ministry aligns with his vision.

The transition was announced during an emotional Sunday service, where Bishop Jakes stood before the congregation, acknowledging the moment’s significance. His voice carried both conviction and gratitude as he declared, “This is legacy—not because they’re kin, but because they’re the kind. They have immersed themselves in the DNA of this church for years.”

The announcement was met with thunderous applause and tearful affirmations, as members of The Potter’s House embraced this new leadership with faith and excitement.

Sarah Jakes Roberts, a powerhouse in her own right, has garnered international recognition for her work in faith-based empowerment. As a New York Times best-selling author, entrepreneur, and founder of Women Evolve, she has inspired countless women to embrace healing, growth, and purpose. Her husband, Touré Roberts, has been a prominent voice in the faith community, leading ONE: A Potter’s House Church in Los Angeles and Potter’s House Denver.

The leadership shift comes following Bishop Jakes’ health scare in November 2024, when he suffered a heart attack while preaching. The incident accelerated long-standing succession plans, ensuring that the church remains strong and forward-moving.

Despite stepping down as senior pastor, Jakes will continue to serve as Chairman of the Board and focus on community development, leadership training, and ministerial expansion. His role remains integral in shaping the future of The Potter’s House and fostering a seamless transition for its new leaders.

Sarah Jakes Roberts, visibly moved by the occasion, expressed deep gratitude for her father’s unwavering guidance. “I’m honoured, I’m grateful, and I’m so happy you’re going to get some rest,” she said, acknowledging the years of tireless service Bishop Jakes has given to the church and its global audience.

With this transition, The Potter’s House embarks on a renewed mission—one that embraces legacy, evolution, and faith-driven innovation. Sarah and Touré Roberts are set to build upon the foundation laid by Bishop Jakes, introducing new initiatives, digital expansions, and transformational teachings tailored for a new generation of believers.
