Biblical Historical Findings on the Gideons’ Inscription

By Church News

General Historical findings have existed long ago, and so have Biblical Historical or Archaeological Findings.A letter inscription that was inked 3,100 years ago during the era of the Biblical judges was discovered in the lush Judean foothills and could be a missing link in the development of Early Alphabetic also known as Canaanites writing used in the 12th to 10th Century BCE, evidence of which has been found throughout Egypt and the Levant. The Inscription is said to be the name of a Biblical judge known as Gideon who was given the nickname Jerubaal after he destroyed the household gods of his father’s house. The Jerubaal Inscription written in ink on a pottery vessel was discovered at Khirtbet el Rai.The inscription was the writing used during the 12th-10th centuries BCE. The painted pottery is dated by the archaeologist to 1,100 BCE, which would make it before the formation of the biblical monarchy. This would be the first hard evidence of a name from the Biblical stories of the judges that are on an artefact contemporary to the period.According to a Cross-Institutional team of archaeologists and epigraphers, the partial inscription, painted on 3 pottery sherds from an incomplete small vessel, is most logically read as ‘Jerubbaal’ or ‘Yeru ba’al’, which was the nickname of the biblical judge Gideon, son of Joash, who was active in the northern parts of the Land of Israel during his era. Connecting the dots between the biblical judge (Gideon) under the name painted on the broken pottery is possible.2 Timothy 3:16-17 says: The Bible is the written word of God it was God-breathed to human writers and is therefore useful for edifying and teaching believers in the way of God. Through this Bible verse, we are made to know that the Bible stories are true and have been in existence long ago.Inscriptions such as this are rare but they are slowly filling the gap, they not only show that there has been an existence of alphabet like this in the time past but they also show that there was continuity in culture, language and tradition.ALSO READ: Biblical Historical Findings on the Pilate Inscription
