Benita Okojie Adeyina, the child-star gospel singer, has been featured in her first film, a Netflix six-part series “Becoming Abi” by Bolu Essien, a Nollywood actor, Producer and Christian who started her acting career in Mount Zion movie production.The gospel singer shared the news via her Instagram page.“Becoming Abi” is based on Bolu Essien’s experiences as it chronicles her journey working as a young professional in one of Nigeria’s most prestigious advertising agencies in Lagos.It explores what it looks like as a young professional navigating a new place of work, co-existing with difficult bosses, exploring friendships, love, faith, and above all, striving to strike a balance in a fun and relatable way.In an interview, the Osemudiamen crooner said, “I feel like people put pressure on child stars to be what they are not. Although I am not pressured, I try to make sure that I don’t put pressure on myself. I only do what I want to do. At the end of the day, it is a personal thing. One is fulfilling one’s purpose, not people’s idea of what one’s purpose should be.”Essien also stated, “ I started using my gift in the church, acting in the church and school drama groups then Mount Zion so what all of that journey has taught me is the continuous groundedness of the faith. I understand as a Christian what I can and cannot do, so I can’t kiss another man in movies or touch me inappropriately in any movie I’m associated with. So with my project I can show it’s possible to make great films without nudity.”Benita started out singing mixes of Edo and Yoruba music alongside her siblings. She came into the limelight with her single “Osemudiamen” in 1998 at the age of 10.In 1999, Benita performed at the opening and closing ceremonies of the FIFA Under-21 World Cup which was hosted in Nigeria (Nigeria 99). She also performed at Nigeria’s 40th independence anniversary celebration in 2000.
