Baylor University Empowers Women Through Sport In Pakistan

By Church News

Baylor University has launched a program aimed at empowering women in Pakistan through sports.

This innovative project, known as IDEA-SPORT (Innovating and Designing Engaging Applications in Sports Promoting Outreach, Responsibility, and Teamwork), is funded by a U.S. State Department grant and involves collaboration between Baylor University, the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and several universities in Pakistan.

The program seeks to enhance women’s leadership and coaching skills through a series of sports-related activities, interactive workshops, and virtual learning communities.

Under the guidance of Dr. William Sterrett, department chair and professor of educational leadership at Baylor, and Dr. Mar Magnusen, associate professor of educational leadership, the initiative has already made a significant impact.

Originally targeting 1,000 female students at 10 schools and four universities in eastern Pakistan, the program has exceeded expectations, reaching over 4,800 female students and benefiting more than 7,000 students in total.

The workshops focus on developing essential life skills such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, teamwork, and leadership, all within an interfaith context.

Dr. Sterrett highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “The Lord opened doors for us. Empowering women by teaching leadership skills through sports is particularly important in Pakistan, where women’s options are often limited”. The program’s success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Baylor team and their partners in Pakistan.

The initiative also aims to promote interfaith and intra-faith harmony, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect among participants. Dr. Magnusen noted, “Playing together undeniably lowers walls. We witnessed cultural boundaries being demolished, allowing humans to respect and learn from each other, grow together, laugh, and have fun”.

As the program continues to expand, it is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of women in Pakistan, providing them with the tools and confidence to become leaders in their communities. Baylor University’s commitment to empowering women through sports is a shining example of how education and collaboration can drive positive change on a global scale.
