Bangor Cathedral Choir Stages Mid-Mass Walkout Protest Over Potential Layoffs

By Church News

Choristers of Bangor Cathedral in Wales staged a walkout during a Sunday service, sparking controversy and resulting in the suspension of all choir activities for a month. The incident occurred after the choir sang a specially composed piece titled “Canticle of Indignation” during holy communion, before silently exiting the service.

The “Canticle of Indignation” contained lyrics perceived as critical of the cathedral’s leadership, including “Lord, how long shall the ungodly triumph?” and “How long shall all wicked doers speak so disdainfully?” The protest was sparked by the cathedral’s announcement that five out of eight non-clergy staff members were at risk of redundancy due to financial pressures. The music director’s hours were also slated for reduction.

The cathedral’s Chapter met to discuss the incident and decided to pause all choir activities for an initial period of one month. In a statement, the Chapter expressed its commitment to patient listening and reconciliation, emphasizing the need for the cathedral community to “pull together” during this challenging time. The statement also noted the cathedral’s financial struggles, including a projected operational deficit of £300,000 by the end of 2025.
