Australian Defence Force Launches Updated Military Bible
By Church News
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has launched a newly revised New International Version (NIV) Military Bible, marking its first update in two decades. The launch took place at the Russell Offices in Canberra with senior military officials and representatives from Bible Society Australia in attendance.
Tailored specifically for Navy, Army, and Air Force personnel, this edition includes prayers and reflections relevant to service members facing the unique challenges of military life.
Representing the Chief of the Defence Force, Major General Sue Graham emphasised the importance of providing spiritual guidance for those serving in uniform. “It’s essential that our soldiers, sailors, and aviators have access to a Bible that speaks to their experiences and supports them in their service,” she noted.
The event also featured a historical exhibit showcasing military Bibles dating back to the Boer War, including a remarkable artefact, a Bible that saved Lance Corporal Phillip Davies during World War I. Davies carried his Soldier’s Bible in his breast pocket when shrapnel struck him in battle, preventing a life-threatening injury.
