Athens Cathedral Introduces Contactless Payment for Donations
By Marie
A Catholic cathedral in Athens, the Cathedral Basilica of St Dionysius the Areopagite, has installed contactless payment devices, allowing worshippers to make donations with a simple tap of their card or smartphone.
The initiative aims to make giving more convenient for parishioners and visitors, ensuring that those who wish to support the church can do so effortlessly in an increasingly cashless society. Church officials expressed optimism about the change, emphasising that while the method has evolved, the spirit of generosity remains unchanged.
“This is about accessibility,” Fr Georgios Dangas, the cathedral priest explained. “Many people no longer carry cash, but they still want to contribute. This ensures they can continue supporting the church and its mission.”
The installation of digital donation systems has become a growing trend in churches worldwide, reflecting the broader shift toward cashless transactions. As faith communities embrace technology, many are finding new ways to sustain traditions while adapting to modern financial habits.
The cathedral hopes the new system will encourage continued giving and make the donation process smoother for all attendees.
