Arsalan Gill Accused of Blasphemy Over Facebook Post

By Church News

Arsalan Gill, a 24-year-old Christian from Lahore, Pakistan, has been charged under the country’s blasphemy laws for allegedly sharing blasphemous content on Facebook groups. Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials arrested Gill on March 17 as he returned home from work. His family claims he was unknowingly added to the Facebook groups and did not know the content shared.

Arsalan Gill faces charges under Section 295-C of Pakistan’s blasphemy law, which mandates the death penalty, as well as Section 11 of the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act 2016, which prescribes imprisonment for promoting interfaith or sectarian hatred online. Rights advocates have raised concerns about the misuse of these laws, alleging that innocent individuals are being targeted through false accusations and extortion schemes.

Gill’s family, struggling financially, has appealed to Christian groups for support in securing legal defence. The case has sparked discussions about the need for reform in Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and the protection of vulnerable communities.
