Archbishop of York’s visit to Newcastle Cathedral called off

By Church News

Newcastle Cathedral has taken a significant stand by cancelling its scheduled event featuring the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell. Originally planned as part of his nationwide Lord’s Prayer tour in September, the decision to remove Newcastle Cathedral from the itinerary was made unanimously by the Cathedral’s governing body.

The move reflects the Newcastle Cathedral’s dedication to addressing issues of safeguarding and supporting survivors of abuse. The Dean of Newcastle, the Very Reverend Lee Batson, clarified that the decision was made independently, without external pressure, and emphasized the importance of prioritizing the well-being of abuse survivors. He stated, “Our ministry to those affected by abuse is central to our values, and we must ensure that their needs remain at the forefront of our actions.”

Stephen Cottrell‘s Lord’s Prayer tour, which includes visits to various locations across northern England, aims to inspire reflection on the power and relevance of the Lord’s Prayer in today’s society. While the cancellation was acknowledged by his team, it highlights the ongoing challenges within the Church of England as it navigates calls for greater accountability and improved safeguarding measures.

This development also sheds light on the broader conversations within the Church regarding its role in addressing historical abuse and building trust with its congregants. Newcastle Cathedral’s decision is seen as a statement of solidarity with survivors and a commitment to fostering a culture of healing and accountability.

The event’s cancellation serves as a reminder of the pressing need for open dialogue and action in the Church’s mission to ensure safety and transparency for all.
