By Church News

Amy Grant added to her career-encompassing list of accolades on Sunday night when she was recognized for her achievements in the arts at the 45th annual Kennedy Center Honours in Washington, D.C.Accompanied by her husband, country-music superstar, Vince Gill – Grant, a trailblazing singer/songwriter in her own right, became the first contemporary Christian artist to receive a Kennedy Center Honour.“It feels like an American cultural acknowledgement, and that feels profoundly different from anything else,” Grant told the Washington Post earlier this year. “It feels like rarefied air.”Grant was joined by fellow singer Gladys Knight, legendary rock band U2, actor George Clooney and Pulitzer Prize-winning classical conductor/composer Tania Leon at the Honours.“Like the greatest do, she writes songs from her soul – about joy, about loss, about healing, about how others feel and how you make people feel when you sing,” President Joe Biden said of Grant during his remarks at the ceremony.he continued, “Amy calls music a soul-enlarging experience. At my church … we say singing is praying twice. You understand when you hear Amy Grant sing. Her voice is a true gift from God, and she shares with everyone … Amy, thank you for always keeping the faith.”A six-time GRAMMY winner and owner of 26 Dove Awards, Grant was celebrated with performances from artists and friends who played renditions of some of her classic hits, including BeBe & CeCe Winans with Michael W. Smith and the Howard University Gospel Choir combining to perform “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” and “El Shaddai,” two of Grant’s most beloved tunes.Journalist Katie Couric said of Grant’s music, in part, “It is the perfect elixir for troubled times and troubled souls.”Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2021, Grant is currently set to play a handful of holiday dates with Smith before returning to Nashville with her husband to begin their annual Christmas residency at the Ryman Auditorium.ALSO READ Amy Grant Named A 2022 Kennedy Center Honoree
