88% of 118th US Congress are Christians, Report Says

By Church News

According to Pew Research analysis, Christians comprise 88% of the voting members of the 118th US Congress, a number that has not changed much since the 1970s, when 91% of members said they were affiliated with that faith. The US Congress “remains largely untouched by two trends that have long marked religious life in the United States: a decades-long decline in the share of Americans who identify as Christian and a corresponding increase in the percentage who say they have no religious affiliation,” said the Pew report.Nearly 88% of members of Congress identify as Christian, compared with only 63% of U.S. adults overall. That includes 57% of congresspersons who identify as Protestant and 28% as Catholic, both higher than national rates. Also, 6% of members of Congress identify as Jewish, compared with 2% of the overall population. While 29% Americans claim no religious affiliation, the only overtly non-religious members are U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., who identifies as humanist and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, independent of Arizona, who says she’s religiously unaffiliated. The Pew analysis listed 20 other members of Congress as having unknown religious affiliations. The analysis includes Pew Research Center of CQ Roll Call data on the religious affiliations of members of Congress, which comes from questionnaires and phone calls.Among other findings:
  • Sixty-seven members (12.5 percent) identify as some kind of Baptist
  • There are 31 Methodists and 22 Episcopalians. There are 25 Presbyterians.
  • Nine are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Eight are Orthodox Christians.
  • Thirty-three members (6.2 percent) are Jewish.
  • Three members are Muslim. Two are Hindu, and two are Buddhist.
